Lead Found in Organic Ground Cinnamon
On September 12, 2025, the FDA warned consumers not to buy or use Jiva Organics Organic Cinnamon Powder because it contains elevated levels of lead. The FDA warned consumers that exposure to this product could be unsafe. Testing by the agency found Jiva Organics to contain 2.29 mcg/g of lead, which is equivalent to almost 6 mcg of lead per teaspoon (and exceeds the California Prop 65 limit of 0.5 mcg per daily serving).
(For tests of related products, see ConsumerLab’s Cinnamon Supplements and Spices Review, which includes our Top Picks among ground cinnamon spices.)
Exposure to lead, even at low levels, is associated with neurological impairment, and in children, learning disabilities and lower IQ scores. The levels of lead found in these products exceeds the recommended daily lead exposure for children less than 6 years of age and women of childbearing age and can potentially cause serious injury. Symptoms of lead toxicity include abdominal pain, headache, changes in blood pressure, dizziness, kidney and brain damage. Chronic exposure to lead has been linked to kidney, liver, and bone damage in humans.
Jiva Organics Organic Cinnamon Powder is distributed by Spicy World of USA and packaged in a plastic pouch. It was sold at Taj Supermarket and can be further identified by its lot code (AF-CINP/822) and "Best Before" date (July 2025).
The FDA advised consumers who have this product to throw it away.
The product is one of 12 ground cinnamon products that the FDA has identified as containing high levels of lead following the discovery of extremely high concentrations of lead in cinnamon applesauce pouches, which were traced back to lead in the cinnamon used in some of these products.
