Elderly Woman Checking Thyroid Gland

Answer:

Having an overactive or underactive thyroid has been shown to affect levels of CoQ10 in the body. However, there doesn't appear to be research on whether CoQ10 supplementation affects thyroid hormone levels or thyroid medication. This is discussed in the "Cautions and Concerns" section of the CoQ10 and Ubiquinol Supplements Review, along with information about other potential drug interactions with CoQ10.

Be aware that other supplements, such as calcium, magnesium, iron and soy can interfere with thyroid medication, and biotin supplements can interfere with thyroid tests. More details about this can be found in our CL Answer about supplement interactions with levothyroxine.

I am curious if Max is on the generic Levothyroxin. When I took the generic form, my blood levels fluctuated. Since being on the brand name Synthroid for the past 10 years, my labs have stabilized.

Hi, I'm 77 and I started taking 300 mg of CoQ10 daily years ago to see if it would lower my blood pressure. I started slow with 100mgs, then 200mgs, not going straight to the 300 level. My thyroid medication was started decades ago with no higher levels needed. During covid depression I became haphazard with my supplements and some rxs. and my BP became higher so I went back to behaving with CoQ10 and other supplements and again I saw improvements. Recently my thyroid check-up stayed the same and weeks later had an echocardiogram with my bp at 100/70.

Does supplementing with CoQ10 affect my body's use of Levothyroxin that I take for hypothyroidism?
I was diagnosed with low thyroid hormone in 1993. Started taking Levothyroxin then. In 2000 my cardio doc recommended that I take CoQ10 for my hypertension. Since then my blood tests indicate that I need more and more and more stronger thyroid med.
Any studies that the CoQ10 and Levothyroxin don't get along? Or am I the lab rat?

Hi Max - Thank you for sharing your experience with this. As noted in the Answer above, there does not appear to be any research on whether CoQ10 affects thyroid medication.
