Question: Titanium dioxide is listed as an ingredient in my supplement. Is it safe?
Answer: Titanium dioxide is an FDA approved food coloring agent commonly added to pills to make them white. Although only very small amounts are used in supplements (less than 1% of the formulation) animal studies have raised concerns that it could be carcinogenic. For more information about this, plus other ingredients used to color or improve the texture, taste or freshness of pills, see the Review article about Inactive Ingredients in Supplements.
