Magnesium & Other Supplements for Muscle Pain & Cramps -- woman with leg cramp

Answer:

There is some evidence that vitamin D, vitamin B6, vitamin B-12, potassium, curcumin, tart cherry juice, omega-3 fatty acids, and taurine may be beneficial for certain types of muscle pain or leg cramps in some people. Little reliable evidence supports use of topical magnesium or homeopathic supplements such as Hyland's Naturals Leg Cramps, and CBD (cannabidiol) and magnesium supplements don't seem to help.

Beverages including coconut water, tonic water, and pickle juice, as well as mustard, and a drink sold as HOTSHOT (combining cinnamon, ginger and capsicum), as well as foods such as mustard, have been promoted for treating muscle cramps, and there is evidence that some of these may provide a modest benefit.

Keep in mind that there are many different causes of muscle pain, muscle cramping, and nocturnal or "nighttime" leg cramps, which is why it's important to consult with your healthcare provider if you are experiencing new or worsening symptoms, as some causes, like blood clots, can be life threatening.
