Lutein Information
Question: What is Lutigold Lutein? And why is the capsule of one brand of lutein so much larger than that of another brand, if the amount of lutein on the label is the same?
Answer: Lutigold lutein is a trademarked brand of lutein which includes a small amount of zeaxanthin (800 mcg per 20 mg of lutein). Lutein typically makes up only a small amount (less than 10%) of the material inside capsules, so capsule size will depend more on the other ingredients in the product (including inactive ingredients such as oils) than on the amount of lutein.
More details about Lutigold and other brands of lutein, such as FloraGlo and XANGOLD, information about using lutein, and our tests and reviews of popular lutein products, are found in the Vison Supplements Review >>
I notice that in your page of tested vision products you seem to show only products that have free form Lutein. How about companies that sell Flora-Glo forms of Lutein ?
I am STILL loving your site! How helpful and responsive you are. I apologize for this not being about the topic of lutein but I just had to say how glad I am that I signed up for CL. Thank you so much and keep on keepin' on! Bless you ... I'm learning so much and buying the best now that I have the information to do it.
I'V BEEN USING SOLGAR 40MG LEUTINS & AM WORIED ABT ITS HIGH DOSAGE - ARE THERE ANY KNOWN HARMFUL SIDE EFFECTS?? ALSO WHAT EFFECT DOES VIT C SERUM HAVE ON SKIN CANCER?? WHERE DO U POST ?S FOR THIS SITE?
Hi Gary - As discussed in the "Concerns and Cautions" section of our Vision Supplements Review (https://www.consumerlab.com/reviews/_/lutein/#cautions), studies using up to 20 mg of lutein have not found a problem. However, 40 mg does not seem to have been tested for safety -- nor does there seem to be research suggesting the use of this high a dose.
