Question:
Which supplements should be taken with food?

Answer:
Vitamins A, D, E and K are fat-soluble and are better absorbed when taken with a meal that contains fat, as are fish oil and CoQ10 (although special formulations of CoQ10 are available which make it water soluble). The key compound in Boswellia serrata extracts (sold as a single-ingredient supplement or in combination with ingredients such as glucosamine and chondroitin in supplements for joint health) is also fat soluble and absorption may be enhanced by taking with fatty foods.

Certain other supplements are best taken with food because it can help to reduce potential side effects. For example, taking magnesium with food can reduce the occurrence of diarrhea and taking iron or SAMe with food can reduce the chance of stomach upset, although food is not needed for their absorption. Preliminary evidence suggests that taking green tea extract with a meal may reduce the chance of potential liver toxicity.

I find consumer lab helpful in over 1000 ways. I also buy Pure Encapsulations, which is a brand CL tests. I buy them from Pure Prescriptions because I found they are one of the few vitamin companies that have a Nutritionist on Staff to help guide me in my purchase and specific needs. She responds to phone messages and emails. If I can't get into seeing my nutritionist I can always count on Pure Prescriptions to provide reason for taking certain types of vitamins, she is also very honest, as I also use other well known brands that were test on consumer lab and she agreed that they were also good for what my needs are. Having several resources, as not all vitamins are tested, truly helps me in my desire to be as healthy as possible, I have an auto-immune disease so taking the best, cleanest, having the least amount of extra ingredients is important for my health. I am not affiliated with any of the companies mentioned; just a needy customer trying to find out as much as I can before taking any supplements. I find Pure Encapsulation and Pure Prescription brand to be free of Titanium Dioxide, Mag Sterate, and other additional ingredients that I try to avoid; and both companies offer a plethora of information about each of their products.

The instructions on the SAM-e are to NOT take it with food. Not even within an hour of having eaten and preferable in the morning upon waking.

Hi Mabel - Food is not needed for absorption of SAMe, which may be why the label states to take without food; however, in clinical studies, people have been told they may take SAMe with food if it causes stomach upset.

It is often impossible to take SAM-e on an empty stomach before a meal. Since I take a PPI that requires it to be taken 30minutes before breakfast, I cannot also take SAM-e as advised. I have reached out to NatureMade to get their opinion on the matter and they were not at all helpful. This is why I continue my membership with Consumer Lab.
